The Right Way to Dispose of Motor Oil

Motor oil can be used for a variety of purposes. Before disposing or changing the oil in your car, you should know that there are various ways to reuse it.

Recycling

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that oil from just one oil change can contaminate 1 million gallons of water. Major companies are being called upon to recycle their oil to prevent such an issue from happening. It takes just one gallon of used motor oil to be refined into the same amount of “new” motor oil.

Safe Disposal

Used motor oil can be stored in a plastic milk bag or an empty tight-sealed oil bottle. Make sure the oil is kept away from sunlight, kids, other liquids, and pets. You can then recycle that oil and obtain “new” motor oil.

Oil filters can be recycled too with just the help of a screwdriver which is used to puncture a hole in the dome end of the filter.

You might be thinking of where to dispose of all that used oil! Luckily, many auto stores and service stations accept used motor oil and oil filters for recycling. Just make sure to call them and confirm what they will accept and not.

You made a good point that it’s important to seal the bottle very tightly when planning to get used oil collection services. I plan to look for such services soon because there are times when I try to do some car maintenance in my own garage. Getting rid of used motor oil can get tricky without the help of industry professionals.
